Kurzfassung in deutsch

Abstract in englisch

Starting from current definitions of information literacy, we look at the relevance of information literacy for current curricula of different schools types. We breifly present information literacy standards and describe major German information literacy projects. Finally we discuss desiderata for future research on information literacy, especially in the fileds of theoretical models, empirical research, and information literacy as a key competence for aeras beyond the traditional education and library domain.

The Chemical Abstracts Centennial: Whither CAS?

The Chemical Abstracts Centennial: Whither CAS?

David Flaxbart

2007 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), and in anticipation of any hoopla being planned by CAS itself it seems appropriate to pause and take a look both back and forward at an information service that is monumental in its scope and impact on libraries.

Participatory Networks

(Wilhelm Ostwald’s autobiography from 1926-27 digitalized!)

Bottle in der International Encyclopedia of Library and Information Science “an early example“ eines “literatur guide“, eines Literaturführers, “probably the first distinct information science literature type“.

ACS Division of Chemical Information: 50 Years of Chemical Information in the ACS 1943-1993

50 Years of Chemical Information

Abstract:
The Information Divisions of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the German Chemical Society (GDCh) have recently established a joint committee to promote mutual cooperation. Two major goals of the committee will be to further chemical information instruction (CII) and information literacy (IL). This presentation will highlight some of the committee’s efforts in these areas and give some of the history of CII and IL in both countries, and of their current levels.

A Portuguese thesis on Paul Otlet and the monographic principle).

Title: The point of Otlet inflection: a vision on the origins of the Documentation and the process of construction of the Monographic Principle
Summary: This research approaches some contributions of Paul Otlet for the Science of the Information, such as the development of a known system of classification as Classification Universal Decimal, the ample use of emergent technologies, the constitution of cooperative nets and the elaboration of the document concept. It more specifically studies the Monographic Principle, that can be seen as a predecessor of hipertexto. For in such a way, it reconstitutes to the thought of Paul Otlet identifying the theoretical and metodológicos resources that it used for the elaboration of Monographic Principio. It also focuses the interlocution kept for it with some of the representatives of the Bibliographical Movement, appeared in the Europe in the end of century XIX and beginning of century XX, that they had collaborated for the development of the concept of the Monographic Principle. It is considered that the importance of Paul Otlet is basically on to its project of modernization of the processes of treatment of the information.
